On July 20, 1958, Dr. Artemio Bracho came up with the concept of World Friendship Day, which the World Friendship foundation celebrates to honor friendship and fellowship among people of all races, colors, and religions. This day has been acknowledged in various countries and continues to be observed. Friendship is built on loyalty and providing support to friends in their moments of distress. In Laurie Halse Anderson’s novel “Chains,” the main character Isabel forms several loyal relationships with other characters.
Lady Seymour and Isabel share a strong bond, supporting each other in all situations. This is evident when Isabel saves Lady Seymour’s life during a house fire. Despite the danger, Isabel risks her own life to rescue Lady Seymour by saying, “I dropped the boxes and doll, draped her arm around me, and half fell down the rest of the stairs. Once on the ground floor, she tried to walk, but one of her legs was failing her. I opened the front door and dragged the two of us out to the street.” (193). In addition to saving Lady Seymour’s life, Isabel also takes with her two items that hold sentimental value for Lady Seymour – a painting of her husband and some coins. This act of loyalty shows Isabel’s dedication in preserving Lady Seymour’s belongings as well. Understanding their importance to Lady Seymour, Isabel holds onto them to avoid disappointing her friend. To express gratitude for Isabel’s selfless actions, Lady Seymour provides money for both Isabel and Curzon to escape. Despite Isabel offering to return the money and seek forgiveness, Lady Seymour declines and conveys appreciation through non-verbal gestures.
. .She led him down the hall and into the guardhouse, concealing Curzon beneath the dirty blanket she had taken from the cell. “You’re dead,” I whispered to him. “No noise.” (294-295) Isabel demonstrated her loyalty to Curzon by not abandoning him, knowing that he was nearing death and would not survive another day alone. Her dedication and determination to help him were unwavering. Despite having the option to let him die, she remained steadfast in her decision to stand by Curzon, grateful for everything he had done for her.
Friendship, a strong connection between two individuals that encompasses loyalty and affection, plays a significant role in the narrative of Chains. Isabel demonstrates unwavering devotion to Lady Lockton, Curzon, and Ruth, standing by their side during challenging moments. Ultimately, friendship serves as a guiding light, offering strength and significance amidst difficult circumstances.
